Learn to use your camera
People buy the latest and greatest digital camera out there, then proceed to fiddle with all the knobs and dials of the camera. They briefly flip through hundred of pages of the camera manual and never look at it again.
If you own a digital camera, you owe it to yourself to understand its ins and outs. Read the instructions that came with your camera and experiment to find out how to take the best digital pictures.
Many digital cameras contain a range of features - the preset modes
to help take great pictures. you may be able to take better
pictures in certain situations than if you just use the "point-and-shoot".
mode. Read your digital camera manual for details
on which presets your digital camera supports.
The cost of taking pictures with a digital camera is almost nothing if you have enough memory card space and batteries then take extra shots. You then delete those that you do not like.
So do not hesitate to shoot lots and lots of pictures.
The knowledge you gain about the camera will be invaluable when you are out in the field taking those special photos. |

Learn to use the flash
lighting plays an important role in digital photography. Make sure you have adequate lighting when you take pictures.
Just about every camera sold today includes a build-in flash. And most include a fill-flash for those less-than-perfect lighting situations that need a little boost. One of the most important things you need to know about digital photography is to control the flash. Depending on the situation, you need to switch off or switch on the flash.
When photographing portraits or other subjects in bright sun, shadow areas can be too dark in the image that there is little or no detail. You can lighten such shadows by using your flash to fill in those dark shadows.
if your subject is in the shade then turn on the flash to illuminate the subject.
On cloudy days, use the camera's fill-flash mode if it has one. The flash will brighten up people's faces and make them stand out.

Focusing your camera
Digital cameras often have more than one focusing mode. When using an automatic mode, focus is locked when the shutter-release button is pressed half-way down.
Single area focus - camera focuses on a subject in the central area of the screen.
Focus adjusts according to the distance of the subject. This is the most common focus mode.
Area focus - camera focuses using one or more focus points. The focus positions change according to each subject, focusing on a number of objects within a scene.
Spot focus - camera focuses on a very precise center area of the screen.
Most digital cameras have advanced auto-focus features to help you capture the best possible photo. But sometimes the lighting or other conditions make it difficult for your digital camera to focus effectively.
Here are some ways to make sure that the subjects of your pictures are as clear as possible:
Locking the focus - Look through the viewfinder/LCD and position its focus point on the most important part of the scene.
Press the shutter button halfway down, until the green focus lamp in the viewfinder eyepiece glows steadily.
Holding the shutter button halfway down and recompose.
Press the shutter button all the way down to take the picture.
For conditions like low contrast, strong backlight, focus on another subject that is about the same distance from you and lock the focus on that subject.
Then return to your subject to take the picture.

Use the ISO setting
The ISO setting in digital cameras is very useful. The ISO setting of a camera controls its sensitivity to light. If you're taking a photo of a still object, then always use a low ISO setting. It allows for a longer shutter speed and produces a cleaner image. If you're shooting a moving object, then a higher ISO setting of 400 would be better.
However, that a higher ISO setting gives a faster shutter speed and requires less light. This will produce noiser photos and poorer color performance. |

Select a shutter speed
The shutter controls light and motion.
Slower shutter speeds let more light strike the image sensor making an image lighter. Faster shutter speeds let less light strike it and make the image darker. Shutter speed has a direct effect on whether a moving subject will appear in your image sharp or blurred. The longer(slower) the shutter is open, the more a moving subject will be blurred in the picture.
Most digital cameras do not allow you to change shutter speeds directly.
Digital cameras will usually select shutter speed automatically.
Look in your camera manual for a section on shutter priority mode, or shutter speeds. |

Have enough memory card capacity and a fully charged battery
Like you must have enough rolls of film when using film cameras, make sure you have enough memory capacity in your digital camera. It's terrible to be on vacation taking great photos and suddenly realizing you have no memory capacity left.
Make sure you have a fully charged battery. If your battery runs out then you are out of action. |

Printing your digital photos
With the ubiquitousness, ease and convenience of digital cameras comes the challenge of where to get your digital photo prints.
Few people are aware that the quality of consumer inkjet photos differs from the traditional ones. Although some inkjet photos could last for decades, some have a life span as short as a few years.
Most people who have inkjet printers tend to print a few photos at a time and still go to the retail stores for photos of special occasions such as weddings, baby showers, parties and birthdays.
Printing at home makes sense for an occasional print, but for large quantities or for large sizes printing at retail stores is still cheaper than printing at home.
Printing an inkjet paper photograph at home can cost more than 50 cents per photo, while a traditional paper photo just cost as low as 23 cents at VividPhoto.
We at VividPhoto suggest that if you have a photo that you really want, you should get it printed by the professionals.
For digital prints of your favorite photos, choose VividPhoto. We offer digital prints in various sizes including wallet and large format prints.
